Monmouth Medical Center Ranks No. 30 in the Nation for Bariatric Surgery
Money has named Monmouth Medical Center one of the 75 Best Hospitals for Bariatric Surgery in 2026, ranking the Long Branch hospital No. 30 in the country.
Monmouth was one of only two New Jersey hospitals included on the national list and the highest-ranked bariatric program in the RWJBarnabas Health system.
For Dr. Frank J. Borao, Dr. Steven J. Binenbaum, and Dr. Gurdeep S. Matharoo of Specialty Surgical Associates, the ranking is connected to a bariatric program they have spent decades building and staffing.
Dr. Borao established the bariatric surgery program at Monmouth Medical Center in 2000. Drs. Binenbaum and Matharoo later joined the program, and the three surgeons have continued working together in bariatric care for years.
How Money Chose the Best Hospitals for Bariatric Surgery
Money’s ranking was based on hospital quality and bariatric surgery data, not advertising, nominations, or a reader vote.
To be considered, hospitals first had to meet quality and bariatric surgery volume requirements. Money then looked at factors that matter to patients, including:
- Overall hospital quality and patient experience
- Safety and outcomes, including complications, readmissions, and hospital-acquired conditions
- Experience with bariatric surgery, including procedure volume and bariatric program accreditation
Bariatric experience and specialization made up half of the final score. The rest came from hospital quality, patient experience, and clinical safety measures.
Money also reviewed the highest-scoring hospitals for broader patient-care concerns before finalizing the list.
In other words, the ranking was based largely on measurable quality, safety, and bariatric experience rather than reputation alone.
More Than 25 Years of Bariatric Surgery in Monmouth County
Drs. Borao, Binenbaum, and Matharoo have nearly 60 years of combined bariatric experience and have performed thousands of procedures.
Their work includes primary weight loss surgery, such as gastric sleeve and gastric bypass, as well as complex revisional and reoperative surgery for patients who have previously undergone a bariatric procedure.
They also work closely together on difficult cases and with the nutritionists, psychologists, gastroenterologists, radiologists, and other specialists involved in bariatric care.
The three surgeons are also the editors of Springer’s Revisional Foregut Surgery, a textbook focused on complex reoperations after bariatric and foregut surgery. They contributed chapters covering revisional surgery after sleeve gastrectomy, gastric band revision, sleeve gastrectomy complications, and other reoperative procedures.
