A Journey to Health: How Bariatric Surgery Transformed One Couple’s Life

Lynnette and Michael Martin of Middletown faced a difficult road to better health. With the support of one another and the guidance of experienced bariatric surgeons, they embarked on a life-changing journey together through weight-loss surgery

The Struggle with Obesity and Its Impact on Daily Life

When Lynnette and Michael married nearly 30 years ago, they never imagined how significantly obesity would affect their health and lifestyle. Lynnette, an administrative coordinator, initially weighed 100 pounds. But the demands of raising two children and maintaining a busy career led to unhealthy eating habits and limited time for physical activity.

By 2017, Lynnette was 54 years old, 5’1”, and weighed 262 pounds with a BMI of 48. She suffered from hypertension and sleep apnea. Her husband, Michael, 6 feet tall and 51 years old, weighed 420 pounds with a BMI of 57. He too experienced sleep apnea and increasing difficulty with daily activities.

Their weight gain was not just a medical concern—it was affecting their ability to enjoy life. Traveling with their children, Jessica (23) and Michael (21), became increasingly difficult. “We do an annual pilgrimage to Disney, and on our last two trips, I had to rent a Rascal (mobility scooter),” Lynnette recalls. “It was the only way I could get around. I felt awful, so it was time to say, ‘this can’t continue’. Michael and I were both at the point where we saw all the limitations of the weight gain.”

Exploring Bariatric Surgery as a Path Forward

Determined to regain control of their health, the Martins began researching bariatric surgery options in New Jersey. In January 2017, they attended an informational seminar and met Dr. Frank J. Borao, a board-certified, fellowship-trained bariatric surgeon and director of Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at MMC since 2001.

Dr. Borao emphasized the life-changing benefits of weight-loss surgery, especially for patients dealing with obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and mobility limitations. “By performing a procedure that can remedy these issues, we can change their lives and give them more longevity,” Dr. Borao explained. “Most patients live 15 to 20 years longer.”

From the beginning, Dr. Borao and his team made the Martins feel supported. “He embraced us as a couple,” Michael says. “Dr. Borao was thorough and patient. We felt very informed and well prepared for our surgeries.”

Undergoing Sleeve Gastrectomy Together

In July 2017, Lynnette underwent a sleeve gastrectomy—a minimally invasive procedure that reduces the stomach to about the size of a banana, limiting food intake and promoting weight loss. Just three months later, Lynnette lost 50 pounds, bringing her BMI down to 40.

Two weeks later, Michael had the same surgery. At his three-month follow-up, he had lost 85 pounds. The procedures were performed laparoscopically, requiring only four small puncture sites and a single one-inch incision. Patients typically stay overnight in the hospital and return to normal activity within four weeks.

Remarkable Results and a Renewed Outlook on Life

To date, Lynnette has lost 77 pounds and Michael has shed 125 pounds—a combined total of over 200 pounds. “That’s like losing a whole other large person!” Michael says with a smile.

Their transformation wasn’t just physical. The Martins have embraced a new way of living, shifting their mindset from “living to eat” to “eating to live.” They continue to attend follow-up visits, meet with nutritionists, and participate in bariatric support groups, ensuring their long-term success.
