Cholecystectomy in Central New Jersey

What is Cholecystectomy?

Cholecystectomy is surgery to remove the gallbladder and is pronounced “koh-luh-sis-TEK-tuh-me.” Your gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ in the upper right part of your belly. Its role is to store bile from your liver to help digest fat.

You do not need your gallbladder to live a healthy life. The gallbladder stores bile; however, your liver produces bile continuously. When the gallbladder is removed, bile flows directly from the liver to the small intestine.

If you’re experiencing symptoms related to your gallbladder, understanding your treatment options is crucial. A cholecystectomy is a safe and effective procedure performed by our board-certified and fellowship-trained general surgeons in Central New Jersey, designed to alleviate pain and prevent further complications.

Why is this Surgery Performed?

This surgery is commonly performed to treat gallstones and other gallbladder-related issues.

Cholecystectomy may also be recommended for the following:

  • Hard deposits that form in the gallbladder can lead to pain and inflammation (gallstones).
  • Inflammation of the gallbladder, often due to trapped gallstones (cholecystitis).
  • Inflammation of the pancreas that can occur due to gallstones (pancreatitis).
  • Intermittent pain caused by gallstones obstructing the bile ducts (biliary colic).
  • Abnormal growths or polyps in the gallbladder.

Consult with your doctor if you are experiencing any pain and think it could be related to your gallbladder.

What Can I Expect with a Cholecystectomy?

A cholecystectomy is a common and safe surgery. In most people, this surgery is done using small incisions, and you can go home the same day of your cholecystectomy.

There are two main types of cholecystectomy:

Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy – is the most common approach and is done by inserting a tiny video camera and special tools through several small incisions to see inside your abdomen and remove the gallbladder.  Some surgeons utilize robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery which improves visualization and dexterity during the surgery.  Generally, four small incisions are made in the abdomen and with the aid of a camera, other instruments are inserted through the incisions and utilized to remove the gallbladder.

Open Cholecystectomy – the traditional method, involves a larger incision in the abdomen to remove the gallbladder.  This method is now generally used as a second-line therapy for gallbladder surgery.

You can expect to be under general anesthesia during the surgery.

Post-surgery recovery varies depending on the type of cholecystectomy performed but most can resume normal activities within a week.
