
Michael L. Arvanitis, MD, FACS, FASCRS
Michael L. Arvanitis, MD has been an attending Colon and Rectal surgeon at Monmouth Medical Center since 1988 and has served as Assistant Program Director of Surgery from 1991-1998. He served as Acting Chair of Surgery at Monmouth Medical Center from 2017-2020. He has been the Section Chief of the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Monmouth Medical Center since 2003 and was President of the Medical/Dental Staff from 2011-2012. Dr. Arvanitis is the Director of the Patricia Burton High Risk Colorectal Cancer Program at the Cancer Center at Monmouth focusing on the treatment and prevention of colorectal cancer and has been the Chairman of the Familial Colon Cancer Registry Program since 2006. He was named the Director of Digestive Surgery at Monmouth in 2020. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at Monmouth’s teaching affiliate, Rutgers’s Robert Wood Johnson Medical School of Medicine. Dr. Arvanitis is both a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.
Dr. Arvanitis is a member of the New Jersey Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and served as President from 1994-1996. Dr. Arvanitis has been a member of the New Jersey Chapter of the American College of Surgeons since 1990, he has served on the New Jersey American College of Surgeons Executive Committee since 2009. He has served as President of the NJ-ACS 2015-2016. Since October 2016 Dr Arvanitis has served as Governor-NJ Representative to the national American College of Surgeons.
On a national level Dr. Arvanitis has been a fellow of The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons since 1992. He has been a member of the ASCRS Public Relations Committee since 2006 and has served as Chairman of that Committee from 2018 to 2021. He has also served on the ASCRS Membership Committee 2006-2009 and is currently serving as a member of the ASCRS Rectal Cancer Committee.
Dr. Arvanitis has been honored as both an educator and practicing surgeon. He has been named one of New Jersey’s “TOP DOCTORS” in the “NEW YORK METRO AREA” in the Castle Connolly Guide and one of “AMERICA’S TOP SURGEONS” in the Consumer’s Research Council of America. He has been named a “TOP DOCTOR” by New Jersey Monthly Magazine yearly for over 20 years.
Dr. Arvanitis has published numerous articles within the field of colon and rectal surgery in peer-reviewed publications including the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, and Annals of Surgery. In addition, he has presented several lectures and led seminars at both national and international medical conferences. Dr. Arvanitis has particular interest and expertise in laparoscopic surgical treatment of Colon and Rectal Cancer, Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s Disease and Diverticulitis.
Dr. Arvanitis received his undergraduate education at Lafayette College and his medical degree at Hahnemann Medical University in Philadelphia. He completed his surgical residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City and completed a fellowship in colorectal surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio.
